The kidneys are two vital organs that play a crucial role in keeping the body healthy. They filter waste products and excess fluids from the blood, regulate blood pressure, balance electrolytes, and support red blood cell production. Despite their importance, kidney health is often overlooked until problems become serious.

Kidney disease can develop gradually and may not show clear symptoms in its early stages. As the condition progresses, individuals may experience swelling in the legs or face, fatigue, changes in urination, persistent itching, or difficulty concentrating. Because early kidney disease is often silent, routine medical checkups and laboratory tests are essential for early detection.

Several factors increase the risk of kidney problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and a family history of kidney disease. Long-term use of certain medications without medical supervision can also affect kidney function. Managing these risk factors plays a major role in protecting kidney health.

Maintaining healthy kidneys involves drinking adequate water, eating a balanced diet low in excessive salt and processed foods, staying physically active, and monitoring blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Regular screening tests, especially for individuals with risk factors, help identify kidney issues before complications develop.

Protecting kidney health is an important part of overall well-being. Early diagnosis and proper management can prevent serious outcomes such as kidney failure and the need for dialysis.

At WHEI, we encourage regular health screenings and lifestyle practices that support kidney function and long-term health.
